Healthy Eyes
|
- A dilated eye exam by an optometrist or ophthalmologist is recommended every 1 to 2 years
|
- If you have changes in your eyes related to diabetes you may need to be seen more often.
- Talk to your eye doctor about the results of your eye examination.
|
|
- Blood pressure checks are recommended for most people at every visit with your health care team.
|
- The target blood pressure is usually less than 130/80
- You may need to control with 3 or 4 blood pressure medications
|
|
- An average blood glucose test measured at the lab through a test called A1C is recommended every 3-4 months
- Many people living with diabetes check their own blood sugar regularly with a blood glucose meter
|
- The recommended A1C target for most people is less than 7 Target for blood sugars before meals is between 4-7mmol/L
- Target for blood sugars two hours after is between 5-10mmol/L
- Talk to your doctor and diabetes team about your blood sugar levels.

Healthy Blood Fats (Cholesterol)
|
- A blood test to check cholesterol levels is recommended once a year or more often if medications are being changed.
|
- The target for “bad” cholesterol or LDL is usually 2 or less
|
|
- A lab urine albumin/creatine ratio test is recommended once a year.
|
- The target is less than 2.8 if you are a woman, less than 2.0 if you are a man
|
|
- Inspect your feet carefully everyday
- Have your physician inspect your feet yearly (more often if problems)
|
- Look for areas of redness, blisters, ulcers, pus or other infections
- Have your toenails cut carefully – if you have nerve damage or vision
problems have a foot care professional cut your nails for you
