If you have diabetes, it is important to have a dilated eye check-up by an eye specialist an optometrist or ophthalmologist once a year. Eye checks are covered by the OHIP for residents who have diabetes.
Poorly managed diabetes, over time, can affect your eyes and vision.
In the early stages there may be no symptoms at all, which is why it is important to have regular eye checks. Over time symptoms can include:
- Blurred vision
- Flashes of light in field of vision
- Sudden loss of vision
- Blotches or spots in vision
The possibility of eye complications can be greatly reduced with routine eye checks. It is also important to manage blood pressure and to quit smoking to lower the risks for diabetes complications. Many problems can be treated with greater success when caught early. So…remember to see an experienced eye care professional at least one time a year!
